Oil on panel signed lower left by Joseph Guichard, a 19th-century painter from Lyon (1806–1880). A pupil of Eugène Delacroix, with whom he shared a passion for Romanticism and legends, Guichard was also trained by Dominique Ingres, whose influence gave him a strong sense of drawing precision and formal rigor. Guichard thus embodied a remarkable synthesis between Romantic fervor and Classical discipline.
He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1831 and 1833, and traveled to Italy from 1833 to 1835, during which time he was deeply influenced by the work of Turner.
The painting depicts a lively harbor at sunset. In the foreground, a sailing ship has just docked, while to the right figures bustle along a quay dominated by a fortress and historic buildings, bathed in golden light. Further on the horizon, other boats glide peacefully across a calm sea beneath a sky tinted with soft hues of blue and gold. The scene conveys an atmosphere entirely in keeping with the Romantic spirit of the artist.
The work is presented in its original gilt channel frame, of great elegance.
A painting of exceptional quality, ideal for collectors of 19th-century French Romantic art.
