This oil on canvas, depicting “The Musketeer” or “The Halberdier”, was created by the French painter A. Rueff, active in the 19th century.
Signed in the lower right corner, the work also bears the inscription “after Meissonier”, a direct homage to the celebrated “Cavalier” by Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier (1815–1891), one of the most renowned painters of historical and military scenes of the period.
The composition captures the proud stance of a musketeer in full regalia: feathered hat worn at a jaunty angle, lace-trimmed collar and cuffs, richly detailed doublet, and boots with elaborate buckles. At his side rests a finely rendered sword, symbol of honor and readiness. His pose, both elegant and assured, evokes the chivalric spirit and gallant pride of the 17th-century soldier.
Set within a splendid 19th-century gilt wood and stucco frame with intricate floral and foliate motifs, the painting exudes period character and decorative grandeur. The warm gold tones of the frame complement the richness of the costume and enhance the historical charm of the piece.
A striking work for collectors of military portraiture and admirers of Meissonier’s legacy, this painting combines the bravura of the musketeer with the refinement of 19th-century French academic tradition.
